After founding his own record label Noton, he merged it with the "Raster Music" of Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender and generated Raster-Noton in 1999. His musical compositions, inspired by styles such as IDM, glitch music and noise, are often accompanied by videos that "depict the sound" following the tricks of cymatics. His sound installations have been housed in numerous cultural spaces, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern art gallery in London and the Venice Biennale. In 2007 he was a fellow at the German Academy Villa Massimo in RomeMusicians who collaborated with Nicolai include Blixa Bargeld, Ryūichi Sakamoto, Ryoji Ikeda, and the aforementioned Bretschneider.
